6 Sessions • Recorded January 28, 2015

Discover the principles and practices of ancient spiritual and shamanic sound techniques, informed by the latest scientific breakthroughs.

Today we are seeing a new wave of appreciation for the healing powers of sound. In the words of the visionary Edgar Cayce, "Sound is the medicine of the future."
  • Sound can make subtle but profound positive changes to the body, which are measurable by the latest technology.
  • Instruments and audio recordings are able to introduce you to higher states of consciousness.
  • We are all vibrational beings; the universe itself is vibrating, and through the careful and conscious use of sound we can tune ourselves to be in greater harmony with that vibration.
Scientific research is transforming the field of sound therapy, giving healers unprecedented tools to evaluate and hone their therapeutic practices. We understand, like never before, how sound works its wonders on the human body, and the ways it opens new doors to the psyche. The wisdom of ancient lineages is being validated, while the leading innovators in sound therapy are able to improve upon the ancients, thanks to modern science.
A complete understanding of the potential for sound to heal requires knowledge from a range of disciplines: music, meditation, anthropology, acoustics, ethnomusicology and cognitive science, among others. Today's sound therapists are weaving these threads into a powerful discipline that is attracting increased attention, and changing people's lives.
This course will introduce you to some of the most exciting and effective advances in the use of sound for healing. You will also learn practical sound techniques that you can do on your own, to assist in your own healing.
Alexandre Tannous has dedicated his life to studying why music is a such a powerful art. His search led him to the intersection where art, science and spirituality meet: the wonders of sound! He holds several degrees in music and has done fieldwork in over 40 countries. Alexandre's research investigates the therapeutic and esoteric properties of sound from 3 perspectives to see how sound has been used to effect human consciousness: Western scientific, Eastern philosophical, and indigenous shamanic. He is an expert in how societies use sound in traditional contexts, including religious, spiritual, holistic, entertainment, mediation, and rituals of healing and trance.
For this unique course, Alexandre has gathered 6 leading experts -- scientists, researchers and practitioners -- in the next wave of sound healing. They will share with you how sound helps us to understand who we are, how we heal, and ways to expand our consciousness. They are:
  • Dr. Eben Alexander - The bestselling author of Proof of Heaven and The Map of Heaven
  • Karen Newell – Co-founder of Sacred Acoustics and creator of brain entrainment audio meditations.

Liberating Conscious Awareness from the Brain

Guests: Dr. Eben Alexander and Karen Newell

8:00 New York • 5:00 San Francisco
For our second session, Alexandre will be joined by Eben Alexander, the bestselling author of Proof of Heaven, and Karen Newell, the co-founder of Sacred Acoustics. Eben will share his unique journey during a Near-Death Experience while deep in a coma, giving particular attention to the sounds he heard during his NDE, and how they helped him traverse different levels of consciousness. Eben will discuss his experience of the sound of Om, which was present in the deepest level, which he calls "the Core," and share his insights on consciousness -- including the hard problem of consciousness, the illusion of a separate self, the brain as a reducing valve, and the creative source that underlies all of reality.
Karen Newell will explain how harmonically designed brain entrainment sound recordings can facilitate reaching deep states of consciousness exploration. Listening to these sounds can align your inner awareness to more of who you really are and allow for insights and guidance. Recovering inner wisdom connects us with the nature of our eternal souls. Using these techniques on a regular basis can assist you on your personal spiritual journey and in developing a greater conscious in all aspects of daily living.
In this session, you will:
  • Learn how the brain acts as a reducing valve to limit our conscious awareness in physical reality
  • Discover why sound played an integral role in recollections of Dr. Eben Alexander's Near-Death Experience, including a musical melody, an angelic chorus and the Om at the core of all existence
  • Learn how to use harmonically-designed brain entrainment sound recordings to reduce the veiling function and explore aspects of expanded consciousness
Eben Alexander, MD was an academic neurosurgeon for 25 years and thought he had a good idea of how the brain generates consciousness, mind and spirit. In November 2008, this viewpoint radically changed following a 7-day coma due to bacterial meningitis-encephalitis of unknown cause. Dr. Alexander awoke from coma with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm - more real than this earthly one! His subsequent journey over the past six years has led him to explore more deeply the lessons learned during his NDE and to seek ways of reaching or returning to a similar state of consciousness. He is the author of Proof of Heaven and The Map of Heaven.

Karen Newell is co-founder of Sacred Acoustics, creator of brain entrainment audio meditations that combine digital frequencies, sacred instruments, harmonics of nature, and human vocals to access altered states of awareness. She has explored many forms of acoustic enhancement used for attaining expanded consciousness and teaches others how to do the same. As a life-long seeker of discovering the truth of humanity’s past, Karen has amassed a vast library of information on alternative sources of history and our existence. Underlying the drive to create audio meditations is this passion for recovering ancient knowledge by energetically connecting with sacred sites and structures. Learn more at:

Cymatics: Insights into the Invisible World of Sound

Guest: Jeff Volk

8:00 New York • 5:00 San Francisco
In our third session Jeff Volk will join Alexandre to explore the fascinating and exciting science of Cymatics -- the study of visible sound and vibration. Using video clips, Jeff will demonstrate how audible frequencies can animate inert powders, pastes and liquids into life-like flowing forms, and create geometric patterns similar to those found throughout nature and in the sacred art and architecture of the world's Wisdom Traditions. Jeff and Alexandre will describe how this field began as a branch of acoustics in the baroque era, and how it continues to evolve today, providing a conceptual basis for the development of contemporary sound therapies. This will be a wide-ranging discussion that promises to open your eyes to the magic of sound!
Jeff Volk is a poet, producer and publisher who has been popularizing the science of Cymatics for over thirty years. In 1984 he produced a series of videos on Cymatics, and has re-released Dr. Hans Jenny’s original films on DVD. His documentary, Of Sound Mind and Body: Music and Vibrational Healing, won the Hartley Film Award through the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Its phenomenal success inspired him to produce The International Sound Colloquium, which was the premier conference throughout the 1990s exploring the power of sacred sound and healing music. As a publisher, in 2001 he re-issued Dr. Hans Jenny's groundbreaking Cymatics books, and in 2006 he released Water Sound Images by contemporary Cymatics researcher, Alexander Lauterwasser. He has distilled this wealth of experience into multimedia presentations, and feature articles that have been published worldwide. Learn more at

Song Of One

Guest: Dana Gae Hanchard

8:00 New York • 5:00 San Francisco
For our fifth session, Alexandre's guest will be the vocal artist and composer Dana Gae Hanchard. Dana will present "Song Of One," a fundamental practice in grounding, unifying and resonating life force energy with increased awareness and focused intention through singing. Healthy singing belongs to no category, style, or culture of singing. It comes from a body integrated with mind and spirit. A healthy voice is the voice of one who can express from one’s heart freely.
"Song Of One" encourages you to explore a meditative singing practice and will give you techniques to bring about greater freedom, ease and vitality in the body and voice. You will find improvement in your musical and rhythmic skills by learning songs and movements designed to bring you into greater harmony within yourself and the environment.
Dana will offer instruction in:
  • Anchoring yourself in the cosmos through the breath
  • Training the release of the body-mind in order to allow full vibratory resonance in the voice and response in the "body bell"
  • Singing with better balance and poise, increased support, greater dynamic range and musicality
  • Singing to the smile behind the eyes and into all cells; this activates the pituitary gland and also the soft palate "lift" necessary for fuller release and vibratory resonance
  • New songs that will make you feel more life energy, songs you will remember for a long time to help lift you along the way
Dana Gae Hanchard is a solo vocal artist and composer who performs internationally. Singing naturally across genres, you will find her on numerous recordings in classical, jazz, and world music categories, singing among the great music makers on the planet. The Dana Hanchard Group celebrated its 10th anniversary in Tokyo in 2014. In Manhattan, the collective she heads, the Karavan Kosmiko, has been lighting up nights at AfroRoots since 2012. She teaches "Song Of One" workshops in the U.S and Japan, offering it regularly with yoga at the Jazz College at Senzoku Gakuen in Kawasaki, where she is a visiting professor of music. Musical Mathematical Ratios and the Engineering of Consciousness

Host: Alexandre Tannous

8:00 New York • 5:00 San Francisco
How does sound promote healing? In this final session Alexandre will discuss critical concepts in sound therapy that are too rarely addressed. Behind the psychoacoustic power of sound is a complex mathematical ratio -- the harmonic overtone series -- which is nature’s blueprint for sound production. Harmonic overtones are mathematically spaced tones contained within every constituting tone color, but only audible when played on specific instruments. The impact of these frequencies resonating throughout the human body induces brain entrainment and physiological changes that can be conscientiously harnessed for personal healing and the altering of consciousness.
Using data from his fieldwork, EEG studies, research and experience as a sound therapist, Alexandre will explore: What are the benefits of working with sound? What techniques enhance your awareness of sound? How should practitioners work with overtone-emitting instruments?
In this session with Alexandre, you will also learn:
  • How does sound impact human consciousness and how does it serve us as a powerful tool to heal
  • Practical information and tips on how to select and use instruments for sound therapy
  • Sound use in shamanic societies, in holistic practices and in Eastern philosophies
  • Phenomenological study of sound
  • The importance of the harmonic overtone series, non-equal temperament, microtonality, and the concept of "ethos"
In this session, you will learn how best to design a sonic experience – a sound meditation – that accelerates healing by creating a deep, meditative state. The goal is to enable you to disengage from undesirable habitual patterns and to empower positive cognitive change.

Alexandre Tannous is a musician, educator, composer, ethnomusicologist, sound researcher and sound therapist. For the past seven years he has been researching the therapeutic and esoteric properties of sound from scientific, shamanic, and Eastern philosophical perspectives. This has led him to design a protocol of an integrated experience he calls “Sound Meditation” in which he shares the findings from his research, raising an awareness to how a specifically designed sound can have the ability to help us to disconnect from habitual patterns, and guiding people in how to disconnect from the mind in this setting while listening to the specific traditional instruments he plays. He currently works as a sound therapist and teaches this practice.
Alexandre holds a Bachelor of Music in Theory and Composition, and a Master of Arts degree in Music Education from Columbia University Teachers College. As a recipient of the Mellon Fellowship, he also earned Master of Arts and Master of Philosophy degrees in Ethnomusicology from Columbia University, where he was enrolled in the Ph.D. Program. He has taught various music courses at the same institution.
His music is frequently performed in the United States, Europe, and in Asia. The World Première of his orchestral composition “Métamorphose” under his baton at Carnegie Hall received a standing ovation. As a musician, he performs a variety of musical styles on various instruments.
Alexandre is also active as an ethnomusicologist. He has conducted fieldwork for 17 years in over 40 countries around the world. He is a sought-after consultant on projects in recording studios helping creating awareness in amalgamating various musical cultures. Alexandre is also a frequent guest-lecturer at Georgetown University, Princeton University, Columbia University, the American Museum of Natural History, Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum.
