Richard has been an avid student of our native flora for over twenty-five years, and in addition to teaching classes on clinical herbalism, he often leads workshops on field botany and mycology, foraging for wild edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms, and medicine making. He is currently on the faculty specializing in Botany at the Tristate College of Acupuncture in New York City and David Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies in Washington, NJ. Our fungal friends are some of our most important sources of both nutrition and medicine. Nutritionally, mushrooms can be excellent sources of Vitamin D, a wide range of minerals, and in the right form, protein. As medicine, mushrooms are among the most potent immune system tonics, used widely for immune imbalances such as low resistance to colds, flu, and other infections; autoimmune conditions; allergies; and HIV/AIDS. Especially in Asia but increasingly here at home, medicinal mushrooms are used to help fight cancer and mitigate the adverse effects from chemotherapy and radiation.
Some mushrooms go beyond this with a broad range of activity including regulating blood sugar, antimicrobial effects, and protecting the liver and helping it to recover from damage from a wide range of causes. In Asian tradition, fungi such as Reishi (Ganoderma) and Fu ling (Poria) are used to nourish the Shen, corresponding to both our emotional and our cognitive / mental health.
